Kelowna South-Central Association of Neighbourhoods
Since 1993, KSAN has been dedicated to enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and preserving the unique history that defines our area. In response to ongoing concerns about development pressures and the anticipated expansion of Kelowna General Hospital, we remain actively engaged in various initiatives that promote responsible growth while simultaneously maintaining the character of our cherished community.
The Abbot and Marshall Street Heritage Conservation Areas serve as a vital testament to the importance of heritage preservation within KSAN.
Our carefully crafted heritage signs, prominently displayed in front of traditional homes, share the captivating histories of their original families and highlight the distinctive architectural features that make these structures so special.
Additionally, KSAN has thoughtfully created three informative walking brochures that serve to guide both residents and tourists through these historically rich areas; these brochures can be conveniently found at the Kelowna Tourism Centre and local kiosks.
We rigorously enforce established guidelines to protect our heritage conservation areas and to uphold the enduring significance of registered heritage homes throughout the KSAN community.
Abbot and Marshall Street Heritage Conservation Areas
The Abbot Street and Marshall Street Heritage Conservation Areas stand as testaments to the rich tapestry of Kelowna’s history. At KSAN, we recognize the significance of heritage, not merely as a reflection of the past but as a vital element in shaping the character and livability of our community.
Our initiative to place heritage signs in front of these historical homes demonstrates our commitment to preserving the stories of the families who built them. Each sign serves as a narrative beacon, detailing the unique history of the Kelowna families and their contributions to the early development of our city. Residents and visitors alike can engage with the legacy of these homes, gaining insights into the lives of those who shaped our community.
In addition to the heritage signs, KSAN has developed three vibrant walking brochures tailored to guide you through our cherished heritage areas. The Abbott Heritage Conservation Area, the Marshall Street Heritage Conservation Area, and the Bernard Avenue Historic Area are beautifully featured, encouraging exploration and appreciation of our architectural history. These brochures are available at the Kelowna Tourism Centre and various kiosks throughout the city, inviting both residents and tourists to stroll through our historic neighbourhoods and discover the stories that lie within these age-old residences.
Through these initiatives, KSAN aims to instill a sense of pride in our heritage, fostering a deeper understanding of the architectural gems that define Kelowna. We invite you to take a leisurely walk, absorb the history, and appreciate the unique character of our community, ensuring that the legacy of our past continues to thrive in the present. to the point.
H. Pettigrew House
IIn 1998, KSAN embarked on a significant restoration project for the Pettigrew House, originally constructed in 1906, situated on the former KSS school grounds. This initiative was made possible through a collaborative effort with School District #23 and generous funding from Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). The exterior restoration of the cherished heritage home was successfully completed, allowing the house to be rented to tenants who not only ensured its security but also contributed to the ongoing efforts for interior restoration.
In 2005, a complex land ownership issue was resolved in favour of the City, necessitating the relocation of the Pettigrew House to DeHart Avenue. This decision was met with staunch opposition from KSAN. Our concerns were deeply rooted in the house’s status on the Kelowna Heritage Register. The move resulted in the demolition of an intact character home, the last of the three "Treadgold cottages," a loss we deemed unnecessary. We firmly believed that the Pettigrew House could have been seamlessly integrated into the new developments and parkland proposed for the KSS site, preserving the unique character of our community while accommodating modern needs.
